Happy Memorial Day!

To help celebrate the holiday, the Goodwill store up the road is doing an Everything is 50% Off Sale! So excited. I have very specific stuff I'll be looking for. But you never know what you might find.

(Just so you know, I have a tiny, mustard-colored suitcase in my bedroom that I'm filling with tiny clothes. Boy on one side, neutral in the middle and girl on the other. I'm currently knitting some [mostly] green socks. We have our big ultrasound one week from today.)

Obsession: Pedro Almodovar

He is a Spanish film director, screenwriter and producer. He is ten years older than Mama. If you watch his movies, you can't ignore strong color themes! I love that! His films are melodramatic and use elements of pop culture, irreverent humor, glossy décor and LGBT issues. Identity, family, passion and desire are among Almodovar’s most prevalent themes. He loves working with Penelope Cruz...

Here he is directing her in Volver. She had to wear a hip pack in that movie to play the part of someone who would have a 14 year old daughter. It's one of my favorite movies.

Talk to Her is a lovely movie, but sad in so many ways. And, um, don't watch it with your mom. Or at least watch it first to prepare yourself.

All About My Mother was my favorite Almodovar movie before I saw Volver. I still love it and watch it when I'm crafting. I always cry at the same parts.

I love her nose! This is from Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. Do you recognize the gentleman? Antonio Banderas. He had pretty awesome hair back then.

Okay, isn't she just lovely? I think that wig is perfect!

He's made a bunch more movies, but these are just some of my top picks. How about you?

is what Beatrice looks like when she is asleep. Silly.
Do you think she has enough quilts? I'm making her another one.

Dear Self,

I'm glad to see you smiling (even if it is a very silly smile). It is a good way to face a day filled with chores and other lovely things you simply have to do. There's no way around it this time. You are going to follow the list. Get to work. Here it is:
*clean the bathroom
*organize the rest of the closet
*convince someone to bring over the wardrobe
*make the grocery list AND go grocery shopping
*clean up the nursery and empty the changing table
Okay, that's enough terrible-boring stuff. Once you finish, go ahead and buy the stuff you need to finish the Beatriz's twin quilt and shop for a bathing suit. If it is still daytime, go swimming.
Have fun,

I'm Baaaaaaack!

Oh, it is so good to have internet back! I love it! How have you been?

Here are some things we've been up to...

Making things like this baby dress and knitting a pair of tiny, tiny socks. The socks are not pictured because they are a gift for someone who might just see them on here.

I was obsessed with that nail polish for awhile. Maybe I'll re-apply it tomorrow now that I look at it. My routine was to touch it up every night so that it looked great every day! I liked to paint my nails while watching Mad Men, but I got to the end of Season Three... July, please come soon.

Also, I've been drawing and painting a lot more lately. I really think that artistic skill is like language: Use it or lose it. I hadn't been using it. At all. I've been so caught up with crafting and what-not that my sketchbook was collecting dust and I didn't even have decent paintbrushes! Well, my birthday was last week and James surprised me with a great collection of paintbrushes! Here's a drawing I did yesterday:

And we all went for a picnic in the park the evening of May 20th, my 26th birthday. It was so, so, so much fun! Hudson and Reuben had to work but everyone else was there. Here are some pictures:
Mama and Daddy, Isobel is behind them, she doesn't often allow herself to be photographed, so that's the most you'll see of her.
Cooper and Justus. That is the extent of Justus' ability to smile and doesn't even scratch the surface of Cooper's smilability.
Mama and Emma. Emma was very sweet and helpful, as usual. She made a cookie cake. Uh, YUM!
Me and my little baby.
James threw the ball pretty much the whole time! The boys had so much fun!
Emma in the underpass at nightfall.

And ever since then, we've been going to the pool almost every day! Even though we haven't really had warm enough weather yet. Bea loves swimming!

Oh, and I made the quilt top for Beatriz's big girl twin bed! She is going to have the bed I was born in, can you believe it? I found it up in my folks' attic. It needs a little work (some bright red paint should do the trick), but it will look lovely! If the light is good tomorrow, I'll take a picture to show you what I've got.

Sleep time for me!

Reuben, my brother

Reuben is the oldest of the little kids. Of the seven younger than me, he is the middle. Reuben is 18. He has a serious girlfriend named Annie who lives in Memphis. Reuben recently moved into a vegan/commune situation. His music is his life, as they say... He's is doing the whole band thing and this living situation includes practice and performance space for his band. He's getting pretty skinny.

My hope for Reuben is that he doesn't lose sight of the important things in life. Important things like finishing high school and developing a plan for his future that includes more than whatever-is-fun-right-now. I would like to see him go to college, but I know that college isn't for everyone. I would like to see him happy in the long run and not trapped in a manual labor or minimum wage employment bracket. Reuben will make a wonderful father someday and he has a tender heart.

Style Inspiration: Edie Sedgwick

To get Edie's look (besides being impossibly tiny), you will need:
-black and white striped t-shirts
-black tights
-backless dresses
-chandelier earrings
-short, silver hair
-plenty of eye-liner
-a touch of drama
-amazingly eccentric friends who surround you constantly!

Cooper, my brother.

Cooper is younger than Isobel and Hudson and me, but older than Reuben, Justus, Raleigh and Emma. He is probably the biggest out of all of them, though. He is tall, but super skinny. They are all super skinny. He lost tons of weight recently when he went to Guatemala for school. Now he is back and he likes us all more after missing us. Cooper is silly. He makes silly faces and says silly things and we never know for sure when he's "for real." Sometimes bearded, he has blond hair (naturally wavy) and blue eyes. He plays guitar and sings. His plans include medical school and a hands-on career. Sometimes I don't like him very much, but mostly I do.
The general consensus is that Cooper is "the favorite."

Good Read!

Today, I read this book to Beatrice and found it very, very inspiring!
"My house is me and I am it. My house is where I like to be. It looks like all my dreams."

Okay, time for some decorating brainstorming and changing around of things. Time for some searching for lovely articles I've so far only seen in dreams. Time for color and sunshine.

I looked through the Ikea catalog with Mama the other day and I saw this:
And I zeroed in on this:
Oh, my goodness, James, I really want that. It is versatile. We can change the slip cover out anytime we want. (Although what I like most is the cover!) Here are some other options:

Birds and bird related cuteness.
