Work In Progress

For my computer graphics class, I am making a lyric book to accompany James' upcoming album, Sci-Fi Mind. Here is some of my work so far. (Story: Nerd boy falls in love with alien girl. Evil robot abducts her. Space chase ensues to a catchy-pop soundtrack.)

There are four more spreads plus the back cover. I am using Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign. I've really enjoyed this class and learning these programs! Hope I get a good grade.

This is due on Thursday, sort of. I need my designs finished by then, but the printed and bound booklet is due a week from Tuesday. If you don't see super many posts between now and then, you know what I'm up to!

Inspired By

Miranda July

Life is so ridiculously gorgeous, strange, heartbreaking, horrific, etc., that we are compelled to describe it to ourselves, but we can’t! We cannot do it! And so we make art.

“You can’t totally be taken seriously within each medium when you do multiple things… but it seems like not a bad price to pay for getting to live this life that’s more interesting to me.”

It is inspiring to see a woman in the arts involved in so many areas. She makes films, writes books, creates installations, et cetera. She wears clothes I would wear and I would be made fun of at school but that's what makes it fun. And I like her hair.
Seriously, if you happen to be unfamiliar with this artists, look her up and sift through her work. I hope you enjoy as much as I do her ability to take trivial, everyday happenings and turn them into poetic, philosophical moments.

Looks like we had an intruder! The cute kind :)

Bea isn't really wearing this today, btw. I went ahead and took some pictures in advance in case today got filled up with food-family-friends-fun and what-not. Think it will??

sweatshirt: thrifted
shorts: from Am's collection of donated clothes
leg-warmers: ladies knee-high socks from target that I cut off
boots: babies-r-us clearance rack- YAY!

On Food

James and I are not vegan.

We just did a week long cleansing as a kick-off toward a more clean, balanced, ethical and sustainable eating habit. We ate only cleansing foods (as opposed to building foods such as cheeses and meats). We ate a lot of veggies and avoided preservatives, artificial sweeteners, etc. We also spent time in the sauna at our gym to help get out toxins.

This is going to be a big shift for us and it can't happen abruptly. We learned this week that our bodies need a gentler transition and that it will take time (like months or a year or longer) for us to replace most of our foods and recipes. I have no idea what to make!!! (If anyone out there has vegan/vegetarian recipes, please share!!)

The goal is not to be vegan or even fully vegetarian. Animal products don't bother us so long as they are ethically produced and don't contain hormones and antibiotics and aren't over-processed. We've switched to raw milk for the kids and organic soy for ourselves, but we pretty much only use it in coffee.

Personally, I would really like support for this change. I don't want my friends to feel that we are against them or look down on them for eating what they do, but I know that is how this kind of thing is easily taken. I thought that about the vegans I know, like "they think they are better and superior to all of us normal people." Now, I am certain that is not the case with them any more than it is for us! Although, I'd love to see my friends move in this direction, too. That way we could share recipes.

So that hair cut in the second picture? I really like it. Don't know why. It just appeals.

Cold

Beatrice has a cough and our heat stopped blowing heat. It turned to lukewarm and then plain cold. So we are at my folks' house (affectionately called Irene).

Irene is warm!! Two wood stoves and plenty of room. This is where we lived as a family of ten, before any of us had left the nest. Reuben, Justus, Raleigh and Emma (the younger half of us kids) still live here, but Reuben is out for the night so there's an extra room.

Hopefully our heat can get fixed over the weekend.

James' Collection of Glasses

James and I have similar taste. We can go out matching if we want to-- right down to our glasses.

Politics

If you are interested in what's going down in the presidential race, I recommend you check out my friend's blog. On Politically Confused, Josh delves into the meaty issues and backs up his statements with links so you can read for yourself. He gives statistics (which I love) and also shares his opinions (which I tend to see as fair and based on a logical view of what's what and all). As you can see from the title, he is not married to either side.

Goodwill, Good Lesson

So yesterday, the kids and I went to Goodwill (50% for Veteran's Day- WooHoo!) and Beatrice really embarrassed me. It's probably the first of many embarrassing moments in public with my kids. On the whole, though, I think the experience worked out for the best.

The lady in front of us was a mean, sour, bitter old thing. Making faces and saying negative things and just generally showing a nasty spirit. Well. Beatrice HIT her. Didn't say anything or whatever. Just hit her.

What would you have done? I apologized to the woman (who asked "Do she don't like me?") and brought Bea back over to stand with me. It took forever to get through the line, but once we were back at our car we had a little talk.

I told Bea that even when people are mean and sour, we mustn't hit them or be mean back to them. Even if they seem like they need a good whack, we must try to be kind and sweet. We must always maintain our own cheerful disposition, regardless of other people's attitudes.

And that's what integrity is, right? The quality of being unimpaired by our surroundings. I hope I can take my own advice and be the example I ought to be for her!

Aaaaaaaand here is the dress I found on the dollar rack:

It comes to just below the knees.

Why can't I be Howl???

Coming Soon

Getting ready for a little shop update and really excited about some of these new garments. The black and white dress is one of my all time faves!!! It reminds me of something one might see in a Fellini film and it's from the 1960s too! Hopefully I won't change my mind about selling it...   *willpower*

Today We...

Dressed up in coordinating clothes and took time-delay pictures with our still relatively new camera. Obviously, we have not mastered the camera quite yet. But this was still a lot of fun! Yep, we're that kind of family.

We also ventured into a part of town we rarely visit (to check out a new Miracle Hill) and were reminded of how blessed we are! Not everyone gets to enjoy the comforts and luxuries that we sometimes take for granted. I love my family and our little home so very much!!
