Dune, the Game

So I just searched the dune tag here on my blog and realized that I never showed you the Dune board game I made! It has real rules and all the pieces and all original artwork and a lot of hand lettering. And it has a glossary of terms in case you are not saturated in the Duniverse like I am.

I made it from scratch last semester for one of my projects. We took pictures of all our projects at the end of term.

So what do you think? Want to play or is this going too far?

Syd Likes Dune Too

Hmmm, Halloween ideas right here^

Yesterday, on my way to the post office I noticed I was being followed by a little black sports car. The car pulled in next to mine when I parked. As I got out, the driver, a 50-60 something man, addressed me thusly, "Excuse me, miss."

"Yes?" said I, for around here in broad daylight and in public, I'm not timid of strangers.

"I see you read Herbert."

He had followed me because of my Dune bumper stickers!!!

The man introduced himself as Syd and we ended up geeking out over Dune for a good long while, going beyond Frank Herbert into the additional Dune books written by his son Brian and a co-author who shall go unnamed.

I'm not going to recount the whole conversation, but I will say that Kyle MacLachlan's name came up only once and in passing. We talked more about Duncan Idaho and actress Linda Hunt ("every time I see her, I say to myself, that there is the Shadout Mapes"). Anyway, here's my favorite quote, which I urge you to read in a good ol' Southern drawl:

"Let me put it this way, they are in cahoots with the Face Dancers."

Return to Arrakis

So I've been reading Umberto Eco's The Name of the Rose (Il nome della rosa) to satisfy my Sherlock cravings. (I recast it, though, hope that doesn't offend anyone. [nevermind, never you mind who is who...]) It is an intellectual mystery wherein the author assumes the reader is comfortable with stretches of Latin (check), French (une petit) and Italian (niente affatto). They are all thrown together pell-mell whilst I do my best to recall anything that remains of my past studies. Yikes. The story is gripping though and there's enough English that I can keep up.

I only know one person who has read this: my friend Josh. He knows I'm trying to read it. Yet, yesterday he went out and bought the next Dune book for me. So much for improving my romance languages. I'm about halfway through Heretics of Dune as of tonight. And I'll read a bit more before bed.

Lately I've Been:

Listening to: Decembrists, T-Rex, random mixes my peeps have made for me, NPR

Reading: Heretics of Dune by Frank Herbert (I'm reading it on my Kindle and I have to say I like the audio books better. All the different readers make it so compelling.)

(re-) Watching: Arrested Development

Looking forward to: the lovely plans we make for our weekends that may or may not come to fruition.

Relieved about: someone I love leaving the state.

On my mind: Family and why we turn out the way we do. AND (excuse me while I delve into the realm of personal opinion) how hypocritical it is to be vegan out of conscience and "experiment" with drugs. (You don't support the mistreatment of animals but you support the drug cartels and their mistreatment of HUMANS?) Wow- the things we think up while washing dishes, eh?

Stressed about: my Computer Graphics project, creating typography portraits in Illustrator.

Wasting time: on Tumblr
