Spending Time With James

One of the things I want to do this year is get back to a closer relationship with my husband. It's not that there's anything wrong as it is, but life gets busy and we have kids and we work so much that sometimes we just end up not hanging out. The kids go to bed and he reads and I work on school stuff and that's that.

But I had this idea. See, I drink wine almost every night. A glass of red. It's supposed to be healthy, right? But it's not good to drink alone, they say. But I do anyway because James doesn't like wine.

Well, on a recent date, I got him to try this unfiltered sake. It turns out it is a solid overlap of his taste preference and my own.

So I got three bottles from the liquor store. The first bottle was consumed while chatting on the couch and watching Sound of Noise. (good movie!) The second was consumed while folding 6 loads of laundry. We still have one bottle left and already we have spent more time hanging out together than usual.

At work last night, I found myself missing James and wondering what he was up to and looking forward to seeing him. Like I said, we are fine. But 9 years into a relationship? There are bound to be peaks and valleys. If some Japanese alcohol can warm our winter, I say it's a good thing.

This is kind of a pity though because one of my heretofore unspoken resolutions is to drink less.

James

Eight years ago today, I got out of work early. There was an art exhibit opening and I just had to go. It was 45 minutes away and there wasn't anyone to go with me, but that didn't matter. I really felt that it was important for me to be there.

Well, I saw some great art. In a studio upstairs, I stood in front of a huge painting -the size of a wall. It was a woman in a green gown, beautiful and mesmerizing. When I turned around, there was this guy.

We walked downtown and he held my hand. The next day we met to walk a nature trail. The next night we went to the top of a mountain and looked at the stars. It was Spring Break. We saw each other every day. When I went back to school, my friends could tell something had changed.

Six months to the day after we met, he gave me a ring. We were married on Valentine's Day.

We played music and lived by the sea. Went through all that stuff that is supposed to build character. Then one day, we decided that it was now or never and doubled our numbers...

Happy anniversary, Babe. I love you all the much that I can!

Happy Birthday, Son!

My little guy is a year old! This was a whole darn year ago! Un-buh-lievable.

Am, you are so cute that it's not even fair. I could spend all day with my cheek smooshed into yours (if you didn't have a sister competing for cheek smooshage).  In just a couple weeks you have become a pro at walking. And what's all this about repeating everything I say! You are a baby, for crying out loud. Aren't you supposed to just coo?

Cute things:

1. You and Bea are going as skeletons for halloween and I got you both masks. You hold yours up and say, BOO!

2. You love my monkey Ferdinand, but when he cries, your face clouds up with the most adorable pout ever. Not because you are scared, but because you feel sorry for him. You empathize. I'm going to video tape it because it really is too much.

3. You love to cuddle with a teddy bear or blanky to go to sleep. When I check on you, you often have one of your two quilts wrapped around your head.

4. Today when Papa Jake told Beatrice that Mama Lulu needed a hug, all you heard was "needs a hug." You dove out of my arms for Papa Jake like life or death and you gave him the sweetest hug. I love that you care so much about peoples' needs even when you don't understand the context.

5. The way you look in a birthday hat:

I love you, son. Grow up strong and handsome like your daddy. Be brave and adventurous like your sister. And always be silly. Like your mama.

Song of the Day No. 57

"Zombie Girl of my Dreams"

Zombie, zombie girl of my dreams
Zombie, zombie making love to me

From the first time that I saw her
I knew I had to have her
She is by far the most
Attractive cadaver

From a pallor that’s beyond compare
To the rat’s nest style of her hair

Zombie, zombie girl of my dreams
Zombie, zombie making love to me
