How To Impersonate Andy Warhol

We are each doing a brochure on the topic of our choice. Our designs have to be based on a grid system. What do you think of my topic?

HOW TO IMPERSONATE ANDY WARHOL:

The Look:
Andy Warhol was an artist obsessed with celebrity and beauty. He not only wanted to portray American icons, he aspired to be one. His look was suitably iconic.

To get the Warhol look, try a boldly striped shirt under a leather jacket and some dark glasses. For more of an evening look, pair a white oxford with a skinny tie or a turtleneck under a blazer. Wear black cigarette pants or shabby jeans. Top it all off with a silver wig.

The Mannerisms:
A gay man, Warhol’s friends in the
early 1960s criticized him for being “too swishy.” His dyslexia and his
difficulty with verbal communication led him to develop his signature style of expression.

He had a generic, non-specific enthusiasm for just about anything, often communicating with little more than  simple expressions such as “Wow” or “Oh, great.”

The Props:
“When I got my first television set, I stopped caring so much about
having close relationships.”

Warhol was enamoured of technology because it was a way to detach himself from emotional drama. He wanted to watch drama, but not be involved in it.

Carry a camera or a tape recorder to experience similar detachment.

The Muse:
Like all great celebrities, Warhol knew how to look good in pictures and it’s a lot easier to look great in a picture when you have a beautiful girl on your arm.

In Edie Sedgwick, Warhol created a doppelgänger, but he had other muses such as chanteuse Nico and drag queen Candy Darling to inspire him as well.

If you want to be authentic in your impersonation, make sure you have a glamorous girl at your side.

My Lovely

I'm really loving this song these days! It is super easy to play, but I dare you to attempt to learn all the millions of lyrics. (Did Wes Anderson introduce you to this song in Darjeeling Ltd or are you hipper than I am?)

Playing guitar has become a fairly important part of my life lately. It is so relaxing during these hectic midterms.

School could easily have me stressed to the max. But it doesn't. I balance it with all my other responsibilities and it just becomes one more thing. The thing I do after the kids are asleep.

Better get back to work now.

(P.S. Spring Break is coming up pretty soon and rumor has it that the latest Darger album is waiting in the wings to burst forth in all its catchy popness.)

Lust List: Dresses

This past week, Kate over at Scathingly Brilliant wore a really pretty black and white dress from ASOS. I had never even heard of that site before, but when I checked it out-- Oh Happy Day. For me anyway, maybe not for James and his bank account. Shouldn't've given me my own card, James :) (I'm joking, you guys! I have my own money anyway...)
Such pretty styles and all with alternative color choices! The mint green one is out of stock right now, but all the others are available and in the sale section. Really reasonable prices in the sale section- like between $15 and $30. What?!

Now That I Have Time

I am making a dress! This will be a short, mod, 1960s style dress. The main fabric is a dull lavender, which is not really my thing, but it makes the buttons and accent fabric POP. *happiness*

This is one of a few vintage patterns that Daddy got for me at a yard sale over the summer- is that not awesome? I am doing the middle look, but I ran out of fabric, so the dress will have to be sleeveless. Also, the pattern was missing the back piece, but I made one up based on the thumbnail below.
I want to get some slightly-clunky, 60s style heels and paint them mustard yellow to coordinate with the accent fabric of the collar and welt. Yes, "welt" is what that faux pocket thing is called, apparently. It kinda weirded me out, too.

Charm: The Career Girl's Guide to Business and Personal Success

I had this book when I was a teenager and I spent countless hours with it. Somewhere in all the upheaval of college and moving and marriage, it got gone. Finally, last week, I looked it up online and ordered another copy. (Life is so much easier now that we have the internet. As a teen, I chanced upon it at the Salvation Army or similar thrift store. Back when I spent more time in the book section than the clothes.)

This is a book that teaches a young lady how to be charming: how to do your hair and make-up, how to develop your personal style, how to be pleasant company and have a pleasing voice, how to find and keep a good job, how to charm a man into giving you his name. And it is a treasure trove of vintage graphics/pictures/illustrations.

That last image is in the section that tells you all about how to deal with The Office Wolf and the many varieties of office wolves there are. You will also learn how to deal with old people and which girdle works best for you, how to behave at a party and how to wear a wig.

This book would make a great gift to any young lady in your life, especially one who has a heart for vintage or who is career oriented. (Or who you feel needs a good nudge some inspiration.)

So that hair cut in the second picture? I really like it. Don't know why. It just appeals.

Mod Make-Up a la Twiggy

+

This look is good for those days when you just need to glam it up a little. And when you go out in the evenings (to the tool shed to dance).

1. Draw a smooth, thick line from just beside your inner eye all the way over and out to just the other side. Tip: follow Twiggy's lead and use powder and a brush rather than a pencil.

2. Give yourself a nice dose of eyeliner for definition, pencil or liquid- whatever you are comfortable with. Extend it just a tad on either side to add drama.

3. Apply false lashes. Tip: get them in bulk from ebay, especially if you are new to them. That way you can practice without worrying about messin' 'em up. Because you will mess some up until you get the hang of it. And that's okay.

4. Using a precise brush, draw lines under your eyes extending down as far as you can handle. These will look like awesome lower lashes from a distance.

Extra Credit: Take it a step further by adding a pop of blush on the cheeks and a good, hearty dose of colorful eyeshadow! A touch of lipgloss and you are golden, baby!

Style Obsession: Young Girls of Rochefort

Lately, I have only wanted to watch French movies from the 1960s featuring pretty girls. Preferably pretty girls wearing pretty colors. We've seen a few now thanks to netflix, but by far the very best is Young Girls of Rochefort. Catherine Deneuve and her real-life sister Francoise Dorleac star as twins. This movie is lots of fun to watch! There's singing, dancing, comedy and love.

I have also been listening to French Pop music on Pandora...

(Try Francoise Hardy radio! *le swoon*)
