Summer Drink :: Gentle Lemon Saketini

Even though it hasn't been much of a summer –mostly just cool rain– there's still a strong pull in me to drown in sake. Ice cold sake. One year, it was moscato , another gin and tonic. This year, sake!

To make this drink:

1. fill your glass with ice
2. use that smaller glass to measure 1 glassful each of tonic water and lemonade to pour over ice
3. fill the rest of your glass with sake
4. use a butter knife to stir

There's a poem I found in Lapham's Quarterly all about sake, but I can't find that magazine right now. When I do, I'll share it with you. For now, I recommend you try this simple drink. The lemonade and tonic water make the sake so smooth. Not too tart, not too sweet. Just gentle.

When the Heat Gets Hot :: Yoga

It's hot as hell already. South Carolina is disgusting this time around. I dread the dog days. We just turned our A/C on yesterday. It was in the mid-nineties outside and the upper eighties inside. So now that it is fixed at 79 degrees? Heaven!

But there are good things about heat. Have you ever done Hot Yoga? I haven't, but it sounds like a really good idea. You do all those slow, deep yoga stretches in a a hot room. (Exactly how hot they have it in there, I do not know.) You burn a lot of calories while taking the fast track through suffering to enlightenment.

So here's what I'm going to do. Hot Mama Yoga. It will take place in my own big old flat backyard on summer evenings. Not full sun kind of hot, but still hot enough. My friends are invited and welcome to bring their kids to play with mine while we work out. If you don't have kids, you can still be a hot mama! We can take turns leading.

Yeah? Yeah!

*Men welcome also.

HOT

These are some things I would like to be doing right about now:

-making a tutu for Bea
-organizing my craft area
-preparing a delicious dinner
-playing in the yard with the kids
-trying on clothes
-playing music
-dancing
-picking up Lucy
-mopping the kitchen
-working on my geisha painting

BUT IT'S TOO HOT

I know I could just blast out some extreme a/c, but old houses are pretty expensive to cool, you know. Oh, well. The best I can do is dream of the beach. Or a pool. Or the water park where Beatrice and I will be going this Saturday!!

How do you cope when it gets too hot to move or do anything??
