Goings On

via
Jake and Lucy are staying with us for a while while they look for a house in the area. It's great to have their company and good for the kids to get to play with Arlo so much. It'll all be fine as long as I continue to isolate myself for that nightly study sesh!

Speaking of which, I'm kinda behind on the school front. You see, the last few weeks, I have been involved in an all-consuming mural project. It's pretty much done now and I am both glad and sad. It took up a lot of my time and I was away from James and the kids a lot. But alternately, I learned some good stuff and met some great folks. The mural is in Spartanburg where I hope to be increasingly involve in the art scene.

On that topic, I have a new project to work on. It is an outdoor sign for an art organization in Spartanburg.

You know, I could get into sign painting. Like as a thing. I'm thinking about looking for more opportunities like this and doing some field research in this area. There's so many great hand-painted signs from back in the day and a number have recently been covered up. That makes me sad and I believe this to be an art form worth reviving.

This Week :: a link and list post 1

via
1. Hudson came to town. We all gathered at Irene and ate good food (onion stuffed roasted chicken that Hudson earned for a day's work on a farm, beets, french bread, gazpacho and some cherry tomatoes from our garden). Then, standing around on the huge front porch talking and laughing I thought there were surely enough couples for a dance. We danced this one until my shoes fell apart. Literally. And it was nice to catch up with Hudson. He gave me a really good idea for the upcoming school year.

2. James and I got sucked into Firefly. We did a week-long marathon, watching an episode or two (or three!) a night. Shiny! But it's a gorram shame it got cancelled. Shiong mao niao! (It's not as bad as it could be though, thanks to this.)

3. Summer Project Update: I made three awesome book covers. Th'ain't completely finished, but they are pretty much there. Just some tweaks and off to print!

4. I bought a bikini. It looks like an American flag, it's from Wal-Mart. This is the kind I am used to wearing. Got tired of weird tan lines.

5. Have you looked at my tumblr page lately? I changed it. If you click on a picture, you might see more than is on the main page. Enjoy.

Three things I am working on:
1. Learning the sushi menu for my job, an impossible task. There are way too many rolls.
2. Another poster project for school (an event poster for this guy)
3. I have a portfolio review coming up for the degree I am pursuing. I have to pass to continue in the program. Just a little bit stressed about this.

Three things I am excited about:
1. Getting invited to Gamma Beta Phi, an honor society for students who rank in the top 15% of their class. Woohoo! (This doesn't mean I'm going to join, but I'm considering it.)
2. Training my pandora station to know me so well that I never have to use the thumbs down and often get introduced to new bands I love.
3. Autumn. Sometimes, I think the next season is always my favorite. In Winter, my favorite season is Spring. But right now, I am looking forward to making pies and wearing scarfs. Oh, and sneaking a few salted caramel lattes.

Three things that are inspiring me these days:
1. A school book, go figure.
2. Having a friend as good and true and honest as Beth, even if her sparkles are sometimes distracting.
3. Edna Millay's poetry and biography. This poem makes me happy because it is a clever take on a love poem with a bit of silliness thrown in for good measure. (She and her sisters used a rudimentary form of darge-speak with each other!)

I brought my little song
   And laid it on his knee;
He smiled and shook his head,–
   "What has this to do with me?"

I took my little song
   And laid it on my breast;
It stirred and 'gan to cry,
   I hushed it back to rest.
