Feminist Art

I'm doing a three layer reduction print. It is apropos of nothing, for all you Dumas readers out there.

I just wanted to try reduction printing. That is all.

And I wanted to make something for Kerri Beth in case she needs art for her awesome 'zine, Lady Talk. Plus, we've been having great lady talks in printmaking class (which is mostly ladies) because I just watched Miss Representation and Beth already saw it and it is quite much fodder for conversation. That, my friends, is a sentence if I ever saw one.

And I'm thinking a lot of our lady issues. Reading this and that.

I'll show the print to you when it is done.

Mermaid Avenue

Well, I broke down and got the whole darn complete sessions of Mermaid Avenue. The lyrics are all by Woody Guthrie, previously unrecorded. The music is written and performed by Billy Bragg and Wilco.  I love this stuff! There's some slow ballady songs, plenty of jiving rock and just enough twang to make this southern girl smile.

Woody Guthrie's lyrics are amazing. Words that paint this man so you feel like you know him. A few of the songs are just so tender you don't know what to do, but then he's bragging and causing a ruckus and womanizing. Then he sings about women being ahead of the men all along. Oh, and that love song to a flying saucer. What's that about? (Future Darger cover song is what!)

I know that on my blog when I'm obsessed with something it shows. Remember all those Dune posts? Well, here's a lyric for ya,

"I ain't the world's best writer
or the world's best speller,
But when I believe in something
I'm the loudest yeller."

Does This Come in English?

I want to make more clothes, but pattern making takes trial and error which takes time. So I was checking out some pretty awesome pattern books. Check this stuff out:

I love these really simple, layer-able looks with great details. And I love that these books have 16-30 patterns for so few dollars. But this girl doesn't know Japanese (which came as a great shock to a number of elitist patrons at my former job O.o )

So two options present themselves to me now: 1. Put off pattern making until Summer Break or 2. Work extra hard and spend less time on distracting social media rabbit holes to make time to sew.

Or I suppose a combination plate of less social media with a side of planning for Summer Break.

From any way I come at it, though, an eccentric wardrobe and myfutureself are inextricably connected and will one day meet.

Want vs. Need

It's that part of the semester. The end is just about in sight, but the biggest projects are ahead of me yet. When I finish up all the necessary daytime stuff (class, parenting, food prep, laundry, etc.), I hit the books and work, work work. But I have a fantasy To Do list always going in my head. What I'd do if I had just a minute.

a. listen to music

b. read a story (I read that one already)

c. go see a show

d. work

I guess blogging should be on this list also, because obviously I make a minute or two for that. :)

Ain't Nobody That Can Sing Like Me

Today, Amby and I spent a lot of time together. He came with me to school for the art sale. It was hard because he is heavy and he's two and he's still in diapers and college students are not mindful of young ears and there's no place to nap in a lobby like that. Oh, and lobbies are boring. But then, he slept all the way home.

The art sale will continue tomorrow. It went pretty great today. Lots of sales and all that. Another great thing about today is that I registered for classes and got into all the ones I need. Yes! For once!

*The title of this post is from Amby's favorite song.

The Anti-Nuclear Handbook

If more important things were presented like this, I would understand so much more. Seriously, illustrate it and use everyday language and I get it. I do.

This is a book form the late 70s that I found in our school library. I was doing research for a speech I'm writing. Boy, did our library surprise me. So many great books. And this fun little one.

I'm not going to be citing it in my speech because 1) it is a comic and 2) it has a definite leftist slant (with which, for the record, I am ok). For the purpose of persuasion, I am trying to use only Presidents' Commissions and scientific papers, etc. But for my own understanding and the sake of conversation, this book is great.

March in Review

March was a great month. Lots of school stuff, a fun party, a week in California and plenty of good weather. Oh, and I lost my job. But whatevs. Here are my top posts (most views) of the past month.

1) Not Serving. This is the post was a follow up to Serving. Both of these are about my then job waiting tables and detail what went down. Hopefully, there will be a follow-up to these about a great new job that's just out there waiting for me right now... somewhere... I hope. (This is one of my favorite work related posts.)

2. Anti-Corporate Anyday. A lot of bloggers do those regular weekly posts about stuff they luff. This is an anti one of those.

3. Time; Dont' Waste It is a rant about teachers. It has a lot of comments. A lot of them may or may not be me, continuing my rant.
